The One at the Holiday Party

The One at the Holiday Party

The One at the Holiday Party It's that time of year again where we all seem to have this party or that party to go to in order to celebrate the holiday season but it always seems that the one event that can go great for some or badly for others are the company holiday staff parties. For many people their work persona is not anything like they normally are outside of work and it can be a little scary bringing a date into this world. Not just for your date to try and keep the names straight of everyone they meet but it's a nervous experience that sometimes makes you have another drink or two to relax. Nobody wants to end up being the one talked about at the water cooler for days after the party because of their antics but every year there has to be one. The reason I mention this is that one year many moons ago I was 'the one' and I want to take the time to warn you on how to recognize that you are becoming 'the one'. Sure, the water cooler talk will fade away after several weeks but each year around the same time the stories come back as 'Do you remember when you….'. Of course you remember! Everyone does so why keep bringing it up. Thankfully, I was young and foolish and not in my career yet so I no longer work for the same company. Short of changing companies there isn't much you can do but live with the consequences. So, here are my tips on how to avoid being 'The One at the Holiday Party': Alcohol - Even if it is an open bar do not only pace yourself but also limit yourself. Know that alcohol affects your judgment and not everything is as funny as you may think it is. For every drink you have drink one non-alcoholic beverage. This also can help with the hangover headache. Bad Mouthing - The company staff party is not the time to talk about work or who doesn't do what or when and especially not the time to talk about the bad toupee of your boss or a co-workers spouse. Watch your comments even if they are meant in a joking manner - especially while in a bathroom - you never know who could be in the stalls. Table Top Dancing - I've seen it, so it really does happen. Whether it is you or your date or a friend keep them from climbing atop a table, stage, platform anything that can put them up in the spotlight. Might seem funny at the time but the party organizer and your boss may not think that way in the morning. Sucking Up - Nobody likes a suck up! Need I say more? Gossiping - Although may seem like bad mouthing be careful what you say to someone when you think nobody can hear you i.e. That's Carl and his wife but his girlfriend in accounting is over there. Keep the stories for home or better yet don't gossip at all. It's hurtful and mean. Mementos - Taking home mementos from a party is fine - as long as it is meant to be taken (i.e. party favors). Do not take centerpieces, food or bottles of wine home with you. Sexual Innuendos/Advances - As cute as you find the guy in supplies keep the action out of the coatroom and away from prying eyes of work or you will be subjected to Tip 5. If a person is a direct boss or underling avoid all together! What's your funniest or most embarrassing moment at a staff holiday party? Send your thoughts to the LoveVixen@iMatchup.com.
