| Advice for the lovelorn. (For confidentiality purposes, names in the following letters have been changed.) Q. Dear Rosie, I have a few friends that have urged me to try out online dating as I seem to have tried all avenues from blind dates, to set ups and even speed dating. I would like to try online dating but I’m concerned about how ‘real’ people are on these sites. You hear horror stories from being scammed out of money to people uploading fake photos to dating married people or even worse things. How can I try online dating and still be safe? Thanks, Safety First A. Dear Safety First, Regardless of the kind of dating that you are doing you always have to be aware that if it’s too good to be true it probably is. A common sense approach to all forms of dating is the best way to go. Online dating does have its perks – especially being able to keep your personal contact information private such as your full name, your address or even email address. Dating sites like iMatchup also have monitoring in place to try and prevent harassment and ‘scammers’ and you can do that by reporting users who abuse the dating community by sending an email to abuse@iMatchup.com. IMatchup also gives you the option to block users from contacting you as well as the option to report abuse on every message or profile you view. However, even with all the safety measures that a site can take you must also use your common sense and gut instincts. ‘Safety Never Takes a Vacation’ is my motto – from dating to crossing the street you should always be concerned about your personal safety. Here are great safety tips to follow whether it be chatting on line or meeting face-to-face:
